Alma Shneor | Exhibition, Artist’s Window

Alma Shneor / Helena, inside and out

The work, created as a site-specific work for the gallery windows, has as its inception the film The Firemen’s Ball (1967, Dir. Milos Forman), in which the local young women parade before a panel of judges in a beauty contest. Shneor places life-size figures in the window, thus blurring the border between outside and inside.

The two women in the photograph, the photographer and her subject, blend into one, when the photographer (who takes pictures from the outside) is reflected in the figure of the subject, joining the changing outside landscape. When installed in the window, the figure’s physical presence dissipates, to be located in the intermediate spaces of the visual illusions when parts of the body of the photographed figure change size and form.

The separation between the external gaze and the gaze from the interior is unclear, with each moment of time adding or removing a layer and a beat of the events taking place in the street just adjacent to the window.

The artist’s attitude to the cinematic medium is reflected in the work in the context of the film itself, the material of cinema before the digital age. It embodies an attempt to physically translate the cinematic image from the plastic strip of film itself into a different transparent medium.

The Fireman’s Ball , Exhibition

UTSURY GUTSURY””

 The Firemen’s Ball

Fire and burning, emergency and security, festivity and a ball are all part of the origin point to the exhibition, “The Firemen’s Ball”. The exhibition’s title puts a spotlight on the local Fire Department, located nearby the Art Workshop, and is a point of interest in the Ramat Elyahu neighborhood in Rishon Lezion. The exhibition’s name is burrowed from a 1967 film by the Czech director, Milos Forman, “The Firemen’s Ball”.

The exhibition provokes thoughts about the similar and different aspects of presentations of institutional ceremonies and the installation of art in a gallery, as it deals in the etiquette of authority and their violation. The exhibition offers a grinning gaze on the visual-aesthetic potential the emergency fire situations have and the thought about the ability of cultural and artistic events to function as “A Ball” – a spectacle that, just like fire, is a deviation from everyday life.

Dia Blazer’s work, “The Speaker’s Stand”, is a pulpit made of glass, which exposes a whole geometrical array of lines and shapes, discovered by the viewers as an underground “x-ray”, a testimony of an unrealized potential of a speech, in a ceremony without a speaker.

Erez Israeli presents the series of drawings, “Esther, me and the burning staetel”, made while he was in Berlin, in which his characters returns with a big nose, and above it a burning Jewish town, as well as images out of Madonna’s video, “Like a Prayer”. Also, a miniature collection of the artist is exhibited, including soldier puppets, drummers and characters from legends, including “The Drummer”, a small-scale sculpture.

“Ustury Gutsury”, by Ronen Levin, is an armchair trying to maintain glamour and manners of honor from the past. The armchair, in the artist’s word, “is also the king, who maintains his honor at any price, and also the tragic court jester”.

The installation work by Shahar Marcus and Eli Barak, “Barcelona, Barcelona”, will be performed in the opening night and a documentation of it will be present during the exhibition opening times. In the performance, a pair of dancers, covered with dough suit that creates an inseparable body unit, that once it burns, it “melts” and “bakes” the couple together. The work’s title is taken from the song “Barcelona, Barcelona” by the singer Zohar Argov, who grew up in Shikun Hamizrach in Rishon Lezion.

Alma Shneor presents two works. “Delay from Outside and Inside”, created especially for the gallery’s window and was born out of a scene from the movie “The Firemen’s Ball”, in which there is a beauty pageant by the town’s girls, walking before a team of fire fighters. The relation to the cinematic medium is realized also in regard to the movie’s film, in a pre-digital age, and it tries to physically translate a cinematic image from film to another material. The work “Shakti is waking up”, Shneor scan light and create a burned blind spot, and as it is printed on the brass plate, it enables the bright substance to emerge from the photographed image.
